A Brief Apologia

One of the chief objectives of this blog is to demonstrate my friendship for the present Church of Christ, Scientist. Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health that she "has been most grateful for merited rebuke" (p. 8: 30-3). Where there has been a rebuke or criticism, these entries have always attempted to provide an explicit or implicit justification for it in the writings of Mrs. Eddy and the life and words of Christ Jesus.

For many of us, the recent past and current Administrations at The Mother Church have acted high-handed, as if they were above and exempt from any criticism or even the need to respond considerately and forthrightly to honest questions. Teachers have been defrocked for having the temerity to question actions of the Board. Is this loveless and vindictive organization the Church Mrs. Eddy gave to us? To say no one should dare to criticise or question the regal Board is to say that Luther had no right to protest the selling of indulgences since such actions were a challenge to the Pope and could lead to schisms. Yet Mrs. Eddy appears to have approved of his actions.

If one is aboard a ship and sees that it is headed for a coral reef, does he not have an urgent responsibility and a duty to bring this impending collision to the attention of the captain and officers of the ship? Perhaps they are already pre-sunk in crapulence or some other false indulgence and need to be awakened and alerted to their dereliction of duty and gross negligence. Some of us would rather risk God's rebuke than to be found ignoring, tolerating, or excusing wrong doing in Mrs. Eddy's great Cause. To fail to speak up would be pusillanimous treason against her and Christ Jesus.

Why not take the high road and pray one's way out of these things? If one feels he is able, let him do so. No one is standing in his way. But sometimes, like Luther, one needs to nail his theses to the church door, to do the highest right he sees at the time. Even Jesus didn't pray the money-changers out of the church.

One can question my motives, my wisdom, and even my sanity if he chooses, it is a game all can play, but any blame and censure due from God will fall on me alone. My love of God, Christ Jesus, Paul, Mary Baker Eddy, and Christian Science makes the risk worth it.

Bravo! Well said and oh so needed--especially in these times. Is it not God we should be pleasing, instead of mere mortals? I love what you said about Luther who is a towering inspiration to us "intrepid Protestants" as Mary Baker Eddy puts it. We, with you, love what we've been given by God far too much to just go along with wrong.

Why would you apologize?! Though you do seem like a person of character--unlike some in Boston who ought to be apologizing for all kinds of things. Of course, they do not have enough Christly humility to do this.

To the previous commenter, looks like you are showing your Christly humility tonight!

Thank you so much for putting it all out there for the world to see. You and your blind followers truely show the honest seekers what a bunch of idiots you are.

You play the game well my friend.

Please address how you feel about the Christian Science websites. Do you think these are a good thing or not? I find some of it helpful but some of the forum discussions are a bit bizarre and wander all over the place in terms of doctrine. I am trying to figure out WHAT we believe anymore.

For what my opinion is worth, to the previous commenter I would say, why not stay with Christ's words and what Mrs. Eddy brings out to know what CS's believe? My goodness, can't believe you're not already doing this, dear person whoever you are. We are on a firm foundation as we are doing this.

So much in your latest entry! To think of being unfaithful to what our blessed Master and our Leader expect of us! No keeping peace with temporary leaders (so-called) is worth the tremendous risk.

You just keep sending out the most invigorating and well-written entries! Believe me, you are causing people to think, whether they want to or not.

Let me say something to the person who finds Boston's discussion forum thing a bit bizarre. I've tried to deal with it, quite confusing. I'm not sure they thought this out clearly, or are on top of what they should be on top of. Is it that they themselves have allowed in too much that is not true Christian Science teaching? Could be.

I am a Christian Scientist from New England, and let me say how much I am enjoying your blog. You obviously are very well read and either were born with the talent of expressing yourself clearly, or have learned how to do it. I only hope my high school pupils will text message less, and read more!
Thanks.

To those confused with "Boston's discussion forum's". What do you want them to do? Censor it? If you cant handle it maybe you should stay away. You had better watch you "thinking".

Love it that you brought up Luther. Do not want to think where we would be today if he had cared less for doing God's will and more for his own well-being. Far too many these days when their consciences are stirred and duty calls, head for the tall grass to hide.

A previous commenter stated: "To those confused with "Boston's discussion forums". What do you want them to do? Censor it?" My response to you is: I am quite certain that the mother ship does censor the forums. Since the sites are connected to the church, I would assume that its content must be authorized before publishing. I thought it would be a reliable source of inspiration and discussion. That was why I was so perplexed at some of the content. Some of it is excellent (like the S&H search feature and continual audio) but other things (especially in the forums) make me wonder if I am reading a different textbook. I thought our head blogger here could put his "spin" on it. The websites seem to be a monumental step with potential for great good in reaching out to the world as long as the message is not diluted and supplements church instead of substituting for it.

The mother ship hehehe, this is Scientology after all.

Why would you ask this bogger for advise, go call your practioner. He is hardly qualified.

Does any one smell a cult here?

I wasn't asking the blogger for advice, merely suggesting a "hot topic" in the ranks. It seems the blogger is unsettled by the changes in the church and branching out to the internet is a BIG change. In light of the recent posts, I was curious as to the opinions of the writer as well as the commenters. That's all. No reason to call a practitioner!

I'll be happy to clear up this business about the silly discussion forum: when the fountain is impure, what do you think the stream is going to be like? Did you read this blogger's "Earth to Mary Trammell..."? Go back and take a look to get your answer.

So that must explain the idiots here.

Keep up the MAM!

I just love what you are doing for the Cause of Christian Science. It is obvious for all to see just how much you respect the great woman who discovered and founded our religion.
I thank you...
